Corporate life

You live in a large American city and work for a corporation from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Overtime is common, and when you fall behind, you work as much as 16 hours a day. Your bosses constantly shout at you and use you to boost their egos. You handle the accounts and sometimes have to deal with things that are not entirely legal. It is wearing you down: if anything comes to light, you will be in trouble straight away because you are already an accomplice. At the same time, you cannot change jobs because the others would take you down.

You are burned out, have no purpose in life and are just drifting along. Every Friday you get completely drunk and sometimes fall asleep wherever you end up. You are unstable and always angry. You ask yourself what you can do, and your answer is always the same: nothing.

One Friday evening, you get drunk and argue with an interesting stranger in a pub. He clearly does not understand the local etiquette. His arrogance and opinions get on your nerves. You end up fighting him and win. But somehow you both end up in another world when the stranger uses a magical necklace. Eventually you stop fighting, lie down on the ground and fall asleep.

1. The village

You wake up with a hangover and an urgent need to pee. Your first task is to find water, which turns out to be harder than expected. Eventually you meet someone, and all the villagers immediately run away from you. They even flee their homes.

You drink some water at the home of a villager who has fled with his family. You look at his clothes and decide to take them with you, just in case. It feels wrong, but you take them anyway. Several groups of knights then arrive looking for you, but you manage to escape. From what you overhear, they are looking for someone belonging to a group of rebels, who often stand out because of their unusual clothing.

When you reach the village, you are surprised to discover that you understand the language. You pretend to be a foreigner from far away. Eventually you settle nearby and do simple jobs for very little money. The village is small and welcoming but desperately poor because the king taxes it too heavily.

You complete tasks such as killing animals and monsters, finding herbs and working in the fields. Gradually you become part of the village. You have somewhere to sleep and enough to eat. You manage to improve life in the village. For the first time, you feel good.

2. The village

One day, you are sent to another village near the capital. The journey follows a trade route, as your own village is not on the main route. Your job is to fight bandits and help the caravan along the way.

On the way, you learn that people in a pub are making fun of the king. Someone tells the story of how the king was beaten bloody and never told anyone what happened. Apparently, he just got drunk and fell over several times.

You remember fighting someone when you arrived in this world. You put the pieces together and realise that the king visits your world to get drunk and mess around.

The caravan

After finishing the job, you head towards the capital, but learn that fighting has broken out between this kingdom and another, unnamed kingdom. On the way, the enemy surrounds your caravan and takes everyone prisoner. You and a few others manage to escape and reach the capital, where you inform the king.

The city

When you meet the king, you see that he is the man you fought. For your own safety, you decide to leave that matter alone for now and first earn enough honour to put yourself in a stronger position.

During the siege, you work with a scientist to find ways of holding out against the enemy's superior numbers. You eventually win the battle, but suffer heavy losses. You are rewarded.

Revolution

After becoming a hero, you mention the fight to the king. He becomes furious and pretends that you tried to attack him. You are sent to prison to await execution.

Eventually, one of the king's subjects rescues you with a group of rebels trying to escape the castle. He tells you about the king's trips to the other world and the special items he uses to travel between them.

You join the rebels, and together you gain the upper hand as you capture castles.

Ending

You confront the king. He says he only wanted a normal life, which is why he visited the other world. He was afraid that you would tell everyone and the news would spread.

The player can choose to have him executed or let him leave for the other world. If you let him go, you can meet him again later and talk to him.

The player can travel between both worlds but stays in the second one. You are appointed governor of the city, and after the rebels win, peace is made with the other kingdom.

You can still travel to the other world, but you no longer feel the need: the people here value you, and you have finally found a purpose in life.
